If in Las Meninas Velzquez makes use of a realist style inflected by the new pictorial formalism represented by Caravaggio, in his portrait of the Infanta Margarita the artist employs a realist theatricalism that has its roots in Jacobean painting. The opening of the work is very similar to the one of Velasquez` Profimies (see picture of the work at picture top). However, the presence of the curtain, the light coming from the room, the maids grouped around the Infanta and the expanse of the scene make it very different from the majority of his early works (see profile picture). The subject of the portrait of the Infanta was a controversial one. While the representatives of the court view it as contrary to principles of consecration of the Virgin, the Queen and the Infante were on the contrary in favor of its creation. It is therefore likely that the artist decided to give it an ambiguous position by depicting the protagonists before the curtain. As for the author of the work, it is evident that he imitates the boldness of the style of Caravaggio, with an aggressive use of the frame that seems to enclose the space. The lighting is also an important element that constitutes avant-garde formalism, which was very much prevalent at the time. It is reflected in the presence of more light sources, some of them characters as well, while others are mere reflections inside the frame. The figures are also seen too close to each other, which adds to the sense of energy and activity. By contrast, the faces seem dead, since they have lost the shine of the well-lit bodies. In this sense, the portrait of the Infanta Margarita may be considered as a work that represents a transition between the high baroque and the more austere late Baroque styles of painting of the time. 7211a4ac4a
