Hello I recently toured the property at the above address. It is listed in the National Register of Historic places. The plaque bears Samuel Hannaford. I originally thought this was the name of the family who lived there. However I stumbled upon your website. The home is not listed here. Are there any other records of Hannaford's that my list the home?
Thank you.
Thank you for the information. I have not made a trip to The Middletown Historical Society, but plan to in the future. There is a plaque on the home with Samuel Hannaford and the date of 1889. I will check with the homeowner. And it is correct that the home is not the Verity House.
Delia,
I found more information. (Thanks to Sam Ashworth of the Middletown Historical Society!) The C.F. Gunkle estate (later George Verity House) was located where the white house you toured. If you look at the picture I have for the Gunkle house, I believe the house to the right is 228 S. Main Street which is still standing. To the left of the house at 228 is an empty lot with a large plaque. I can't read it on Google Earth maps but I bet it is info on the Samuel Hannaford designed Gunkle house. The white house you toured is not a Hannaford design.... and I'm still looking for the Dietrich house. Take care,
Edward
Delia,
Thanks for writing. So many great houses on that street. You may have helped solve one of the unknown listings. The Inland Architect Volume XXII No. 3 lists a residence being built for "E. Dietrich" in Middletown under Samuel Hannaford's company in 1893 but did not list an address. Did the tour mention any previous owners or year of construction. I will research this more. Thank you very much for writing!
Edward
